Art Therapy: Finding Your Flow

Aug 17/The Wanderlust Collective/

Art, Inspiration, Motivation

As a child, art was a form of therapy for me. I was one of six girls, and basically the middle child. Solitude was peace for me, no noise, no people, just me, and my imagination. I thrived imagining a world of my own.

Art was how I explored my world. Being an artist isn’t just about painting, it means so much more than that. It’s a way of seeing the world, a way of expression, sometimes compulsion, we just have to create!

Many beginning painters start by taking steps to learn new mediums or experiment with new techniques. But, I think it’s so much deeper than that. It’s exciting, empowering, and gives the artist the freedom of self expression. Art can be a challenge, it can be rewarding, frustrating, and lead you to a sense of accomplishment.

I am very blessed to do what I love for a living. Helping others find their way on an art journey has been exciting. During this time of so much isolation, I think artists should use it as a time to pour out their ideas, and release their imaginations. To dig down deep inside and figure out what they really want to do.

In order to grow as an artist it’s important to set yourself aside from emails, social media and give yourself a chance to hit your flow state. Flow state is when you are in the zone. If you ever felt completely immersed in an activity, you might be experiencing a mental state that psychologists call flow. Time flies, every action, movement and thought flows from one to the other, like playing an instrument.

“How rich art is, if one can only remember what one has seen, one is never empty of thoughts or truly lonely, never alone.”

Getting out into the world is important to absorb ideas, stay inspired, and build a network. But all of that comes at a cost, they take away your time, attention, and energy from actually creating work. At the end of the day, all the experiences don’t amount to much until you make time to block out the outside world and create.

What’s the value of being connected if you have nothing much to share?

You are a creator, and the art you make is your figurative and literal lifeline.

Many of us can manage bursts of productivity. When you’re in the zone that world just falls away and you find yourself working hours all the way till morning, not noticing time. This is my favorite time, just drifting away into another world, time zone. This is when everything just flows out of me.

Learn to spend time alone and figure things out for yourself. The good news is that you will create great works of art on a regular basis and enjoy yourself doing it. This will bring peace, joy, energy, and good people into your life.
